Our future – We care – We Must Eco-Schools 15th Young People’s Summit Mediterranean Conference Centre 11th May 2026 Over 112 students and 43 educators from schools across Malta and Gozo gathered on Monday for the 15th edition of the Young People’s Summit, organised by Nature Trust – FEE Malta through the EkoSkola programme in collaboration with the Climate Action Authority and the Malta ESG Alliance. The summit continued to provide a national platform where children and young people can actively participate in discussions related to climate action, sustainability, and the future they wish to see for Malta. Through interactive workshops and discussions, students shared ideas, concerns, and practical recommendations linked to environmental and climate-related challenges. The event opened with welcome addresses by Mr Vincent Attard, President of Nature Trust – FEE Malta, Perit David Xuereb, Chairperson of the Malta ESG Alliance, and Ing. Abigail Cutajar, Chief Executive Officer of the Climate Action Authority. During the summit, participating students engaged in workshop sessions focusing on the four main pillars of the Envision 2050 where they presented tangible SMART goals with several KPIs in line with the document’s objectives. This was followed by a question-and-answer session with company CEOs from the Malta ESG Alliance. The discussion gave students the opportunity to engage directly with leaders from the business sector on environmental responsibility, innovation, and sustainable practices. Pertinent questions raised and suggestions offered by the students related amongst others to transport, construction and well-being practices. As a continuation of last year’s initiative, the Climate Action Authority also provided participants with a lunch box and a reusable Ġuża Ħanfusa drinking bottle, further promoting sustainable practices during the event. The summit concluded with the presentation and approval of the final declaration containing the students’ recommendations and proposals. The Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Public Cleanliness, Hon. Miriam Dalli, attended this concluding session and addressed participants. Speaking during the summit, Minister Miriam Dalli emphasised the importance of listening to children and young people when shaping climate and environmental policies, noting that initiatives such as the EkoSkola Young People’s Summit help ensure that students’ voices fuels national discussions and future action. Mr Vincent Attard, President of Nature Trust – FEE Malta, stated that the EkoSkola programme has, for more than twenty years, continued empowering children to participate actively in environmental decision-making processes. He highlighted that students are not only expressing concern about environmental challenges but are also proposing the best practical solutions that can positively influence schools, communities, and the country as a whole. Mr Attard also thanked two corporate partners in the EkoSkola programme, HSBC Bank Malta and Atlas Insurance, who have been instrumental for this programme’s success in the Maltese Islands. Ing. Abigail Cutajar reiterated that the Climate Action Authority considers young people important partners in climate action efforts and gave tangible examples of how the authority worked on the suggestions put forward by students in the past edition. EkoSkola students will be presenting the declaration to the main party leaders in the coming days as a memorandum, to be considered for their respective electoral manifestos.

Page suggested by a group of youths as Clover Tutors Living more sustainably doesn’t mean that you have to make huge changes all at once. Small choices, repeated every day, can lower energy use, reduce waste, and help protect the environment. A sustainable lifestyle starts right where you live. Simple actions like saving water, using less electricity, and choosing long-lasting materials can lower household costs and create healthier, more sustainable living spaces. Save Energy in Everyday Spaces Electricity use contributes to pollution and climate change, but reducing it is often easier than we think. Turn off the lights when rooms are empty, even for short periods. If you won’t return within 15 minutes, switch the lights off. Replace old bulbs with LED lighting to significantly reduce energy use and avoid frequent replacements. And during the day, open the curtains or blinds to let natural light brighten your home. Over time, these habits will reduce energy waste without sacrificing comfort. Reduce Water Use in the Bathroom The bathroom is one of the biggest water-using areas in most homes, so even small changes can save thousands of gallons each year. Shorten showers, turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving, and fix dripping faucets as soon as possible to prevent daily water loss. Installing low-flow showerheads and toilets is another simple upgrade: They perform just as well as older models while using far less water. Saving water also saves energy, since less hot water needs to be heated. Eco-Friendly Laundry Tips Laundry uses both water and electricity, but this can be improved easily. Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible: It cleans most clothing just as well and uses far less energy. Run full loads to avoid wasting water, and air-dry clothes when you can to save electricity and extend fabric life. If you use a dryer, clean the lint filter regularly so it runs efficiently. Choose gentle, eco-friendly detergents, and avoid using more than needed. Reduce Waste in the Kitchen The kitchen creates a large amount of household waste, but smart habits can significantly reduce it. Use reusable containers, bottles, and shopping bags instead of single-use plastics. Plan meals ahead of time so food doesn’t spoil before being eaten. If possible, start a small compost bin for fruit and vegetable scraps; composting keeps waste out of landfills and creates natural fertilizer. And recycle correctly by cleaning containers and following local recycling guidelines. Proper recycling prevents contamination and helps materials be reused. Choose Safer Cleaning Products Many cleaning products contain chemicals that harm both people and the environment. Look for options labeled “biodegradable” or “non-toxic” whenever possible. Simple household items like vinegar and baking soda can safely clean many surfaces. Avoid strong air sprays and heavily scented cleaners, and open windows while cleaning to improve ventilation. Using fewer chemicals helps keep indoor air healthier for everyone. Improve Indoor Air Quality Clean air is essential for long-term health, especially since most people spend much of their time indoors. Open windows regularly …

Living more sustainably doesn’t mean that you have to make huge changes all at once. Small choices, repeated every day, can lower energy use, reduce waste, and help protect the environment. A sustainable lifestyle starts right where you live. Simple actions like saving water, using less electricity, and choosing long-lasting materials can lower household costs and create healthier, more sustainable living spaces.

Save Energy in Everyday Spaces

Electricity use contributes to pollution and climate change, but reducing it is often easier than we think.

Reduce Water Use in the Bathroom

The bathroom is one of the biggest water-using areas in most homes, so even small changes can save thousands of gallons each year.

Eco-Friendly Laundry Tips

Laundry uses both water and electricity, but this can be improved easily.

Reduce Waste in the Kitchen

The kitchen creates a large amount of household waste, but smart habits can significantly reduce it.

Choose Safer Cleaning Products

Many cleaning products contain chemicals that harm both people and the environment.

Improve Indoor Air Quality

Clean air is essential for long-term health, especially since most people spend much of their time indoors. Open windows regularly to replace stale air with fresh outdoor air, and vacuum carpets and floors to remove dust, pet hair, and allergens. Houseplants can also improve air quality. Avoid smoking indoors, and limit the use of scented candles or sprays to reduce irritating particles and chemicals in the air. Together, these steps support easier breathing and a more comfortable home.

Be Smart About Rugs and Flooring

Flooring choices also affect sustainability. When buying rugs, choose durable materials that will last for many years rather than cheaper products that wear out quickly. Natural fibers such as wool, jute, and cotton break down more easily at the end of their life than synthetic materials.

Select simple rug designs that will not go out of style, clean rugs gently using vacuuming and spot treatments, and repair damage when possible instead of replacing items entirely. Buying fewer, higher-quality products reduces waste and saves money over time.

Save Energy With Appliances and Electronics

Large appliances use more energy than many people realize, especially refrigerators, washing machines, and ovens that run frequently. Choose energy-efficient models when replacing old appliances. Keep refrigerator doors closed, let hot food cool before storing it, and use microwaves or toaster ovens for small meals to save power.

Many electronics, including computers, televisions, and chargers, continue to use electricity even when turned off, known as “standby” power. Power strips make it easy to switch off multiple devices at once, fully cutting their power supply and preventing this hidden energy waste.

These habits can noticeably reduce both energy bills and environmental impact over a year.

Build Sustainable Habits Over Time

Sustainability works best when changes are gradual and consistent. Start with one or two habits, such as taking shorter showers or turning off lights. When those feel natural, add another improvement. Involve family members by setting shared goals and celebrating progress together. Tracking utility bills can also help show the difference your efforts make. Every small step contributes to lasting results.

A sustainable lifestyle doesn’t require perfection. It simply means making better choices whenever possible, starting with taking the first step. Small actions today can lead to meaningful change and a cleaner future for tomorrow.

MedMaquis is a cooperation project between Malta and Sicily, co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A Italy–Malta Programme 2021–2027. The project was created with a clear objective: to protect and strengthen Mediterranean maquis habitats, a natural heritage that is essential for environmental balance, community wellbeing and the quality of life in our territories. Today, the Mediterranean maquis faces several major threats: increasingly frequent wildfires the spread of invasive alien species the effects of climate change the progressive loss of biodiversity For this reason, MedMaquis implements concrete actions for prevention, restoration and environmental protection, supported by awareness activities targeting citizens, schools and local communities. The project lasts 30 months and is based on close cooperation between Maltese and Sicilian partners. WHERE THE PROJECT TAKES ACTION The pilot actions are implemented across seven natural sites of significant ecological value. In Malta: Buskett Pembroke NATURA 2000 site Xrobb l-Għaġin Park In Sicily: Bosco Santo Pietro (Caltagirone), Vallone Piano della Corte, Immacolatelle – Micio Conti Complex, Isola delle Femmine Nature Reserve In these areas, the project carries out: removal of invasive species planting of native species installation of wildfire prevention signage environmental monitoring through innovative tools such as the IAS App and the use of drones The objective is to strengthen ecosystem resilience and develop solutions that can be replicated in other Mediterranean territories. A COLLABORATION BETWEEN MALTA AND SICILY MedMaquis is led by AVSI Foundation as Lead Partner, in collaboration with Nature Trust – FEE Malta, Ambjent Malta, the University of Palermo and the Sicilian association Il Ramarro. The project also involves institutions and local organisations that contribute scientific, technical and educational expertise, strengthening cooperation between the two islands. THE ROLE OF NATURE TRUST – FEE MALTA Within MedMaquis, Nature Trust – FEE Malta plays a central role in awareness-raising and community engagement activities. In the project, the organisation is represented by Vincent Attard, Johann Gatt and Marvic Refalo, who coordinate and support educational and awareness initiatives across Malta. Through the EkoSkola network and its institutional channels, Nature Trust promotes knowledge of Mediterranean biodiversity and encourages responsible behaviours, involving students, educators and families in environmental protection. To inform means to build awareness — and awareness is the first step in protecting our territory. COMMUNICATION AND AWARENESS MATERIALS This page gathers the communication and awareness materials developed within the MedMaquis project. These tools are designed to: clearly explain the environmental challenges affecting the Mediterranean maquis highlight the actions carried out in the pilot sites promote sustainable behaviours make the project results accessible to a wider audience The available materials are intended for both the general public and the school community, including informative content and dedicated infographics.

This 14th edition of the EkoSkola Young People’s Summit brought together young people who are not only learning about sustainability but actively shaping it within their schools and communities. Their energy, insight, and commitment reflect the very heart of EkoSkola’s mission: empowering students to become leaders of change. More than fifty students from eleven schools, accompanied by twenty‑two educators, gathered at the ĊAK Main Hall in Birkirkara on 9 February 2026 for the Summit with the theme: A Call to Renew Our Common Home: Saint Francis’ Vision. This special edition of the Summit formed part of the global Franciscan commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, whose example continues to guide ecological and social action. As part of the local celebrations, the Franciscan Conventuals in Malta brought to the islands (8–19 February 2026) the Camoscio: a relic from the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi consisting of a piece of soft chamois leather that, according to tradition, covered the wound of the stigmata on Saint Francis’s side and absorbed his blood. The Summit opened with a welcome address by Fr Allister Aquilina (Assistant Director, Secretariat for Catholic Education) and Fr Paul Darmanin (Provincial Vicar of the Franciscan Conventuals), followed by a video clip about the relic and a brief explanation of the Summit’s procedure. Students then moved into theme-based workshop groups (for primary and secondary schools), exploring the following themes: Theme 1: Care for the Vulnerable: Justice, Solidarity, and Human Dignity: This theme mirrors Saint Francis’s compassion for the marginalised and reflects the call in Laudato Si’ to hear “both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor,” this group reflected on how environmental degradation deepens human suffering and how young people can respond with compassion and solidarity. Theme2: Care for Creation: Climate, Biodiversity, and Sustainable Living: This theme connects directly to the relic’s symbolism: a wounded world calling for healing. Students explored the ecological wounds of our planet and discussed how their schools are already contributing to biodiversity protection. During the workshop, each student wrote a prayer to Saint Francis, which will be placed on the Saint’s tomb. After the workshop sessions, students reconvened to present and approve a Declaration that is a collective statement capturing their concerns, hopes, and proposed actions for a more just and sustainable future. The Declaration will be presented to the Archbishop’s Curia, the General Custody of the Franciscan Conventuals in Assisi, and the General Curia in Rome, and will also be shared through local media. Nature Trust – FEE Malta, the Secretariat for Catholic Education, and the Franciscan Conventuals extend their gratitude to all participating schools, teachers, and students for contributing to a meaningful and hope‑filled gathering.

The EkoSkola, LEAF, and YRE Annual Seminar was successfully held on Friday, 28th November 2025, at the Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park and Sustainable Development Centre. The event brought together 69 educators from 30 different schools, representing both state and non-state institutions across Malta. This attendance is a demonstration of the ever-growing enthusiasm among educators to embed sustainability into everyday teaching and school culture. Organised by Nature Trust – FEE Malta, the seminar aimed to strengthen the implementation of the three international programmes which collectively engage over 20 million young people worldwide and reach 87% of Malta’s student population. The seminar offered a dynamic mix of sessions and practical activities: Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE): Participants took part in a hands-on workshop on planning YRE missions, with a special focus on podcast production. Teachers were encouraged to use mobile devices and cameras to explore creative reporting methods. LEAF Session: Educators experienced outdoor learning through a guided tour of Malta’s first Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, highlighting the importance of ecosystems and biodiversity. EkoSkola Session: This session addressed challenges identified in last year’s school questionnaire and explored practical strategies to strengthen the programme within schools. Each session also provided updates on accreditation processes, ensuring schools remain aligned with international standards. A networking break allowed participants to exchange ideas while practising sustainability by bringing their own reusable travel cups. The atmosphere was collaborative, with educators sharing experiences and building connections across schools.

47 schools were awarded the internationally renowned Eco-Schools Green Flag for their outstanding dedication to sustainability, student empowerment, and climate action within their communities. The ceremony presided over by H.E. Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, honoured students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible citizenship. Held at Villa Blanche, limits of Żurrieq, the event was organised by Nature Trust – FEE Malta in collaboration with the Local Councils Association. St Joseph Blata l-Bajda School and St Joseph, Mater Boni Consillii School received the 10th consecutive Green Flag marking two decades of unwavering commitment towards sustainability. Five schools were awarded the prestigious international Green Flag Award for the first time. (For a full list of awardees please refer to the below list) For the first time in the history of the EkoSkola programme, schools also honoured Local Councils through the EkoSkola Eco-Community Collaboration Award initiative. Nine Local Councils were nominated by Eco-Schools committees, culminating in the presentation of the award, recognising exemplary partnerships between students and local authorities in driving sustainability at community level. Pembroke Local Council was acclaimed as the overall winner for this year. More than two decades ago, Nature Trust – FEE Malta pioneered the Eco-Schools programme in Malta, opening a national pathway for young people to become active agents of change. Today EkoSkola has evolved into Malta’s flagship Education for Sustainable Development programme, empowering students to take meaningful action, speak up on environmental challenges, and design innovative solutions by engaging their communities. Through hands-on learning, democratic participation, and real-world problem-solving, students today are not only learning about sustainability, but they are leading it. EkoSkola’s impact now spans the full breadth of the Maltese education system, with over 85% of the national student population actively participating. The programme is fully accredited by the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education (DQSE) at MQF Levels 1, 2 and 3, and is recognised by UNESCO as a leading model of Education for Sustainable Development. Its framework and practices are firmly aligned with Malta’s National Education Strategy 2024–2030, ensuring that students develop the knowledge, values and agency needed to become responsible citizens and environmental leaders. This year’s Green Flag achievements once again highlight the long-standing dedication of schools flourishing as sustainability hubs. Through initiatives such as the Sustainable Mobility Campaign, run in collaboration with HSBC Malta Foundation, and the EkoSkola – Lidl Action for Climate Change: Responsible Food Consumption innovative community projects supported by partners including HSBC Malta Foundation and Lidl Malta, students are testing sustainable commuting models, increasing environmental literacy, and encouraging behavioural change. Through EkoSkola students also gain access to investigative learning platforms like NASA’s GLOBE, Young Reporters for the Environment, and LEAF, strengthening STEM learning while deepening their connection to the natural world. Speaking during the ceremony, Mr Vince Attard the Honorary President of Nature Trust – FEE Malta praised EkoSkola students for their remarkable passion and innovation. From monitoring biodiversity to advocating for sustainable mobility practices, from curbing food waste to thrift shopping, Maltese students are …

For the first time in the history of the EkoSkola programme, schools also honoured Local Councils through the EkoSkola Eco-Community Collaboration Award initiative.

From monitoring biodiversity to advocating for sustainable mobility practices, from curbing food waste to thrift shopping, Maltese students are demonstrating that sustainable development is not a distant aspiration, but a collective responsibility and lived practice. Mr Attard reiterated that Nature Trust – FEE Malta continues to align its strategy with FEE’s GAIA 20:30 vision and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, prioritising climate resilience, equity, and the protection of Malta’s unique biodiversity and natural heritage.

The EkoSkola programme is supported by:
Local Councils Association, Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Ministry for the Environment Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness., HSBC Malta Foundation and Lidl Malta.

The Eco-Schools programme is active in 79 countries and engaging more than 15 million students worldwide. It is locally run by Nature Trust – FEE Malta, which launched EkoSkola in 2002. From six pilot schools, the programme now encompasses 126 schools and more than 51982 student participants. 86 schools have earned the Green Flag to date.
