Young People’s Earth Summit

The year 2012 is a very significant year as besides being the 10th Anniversary for EkoSkola, it is also the 3rd UN Conference on Sustainable Development – Rio +20 due June 2012.  For this reason, a number of schools met for the Young People’s Earth Summit organised by EkoSkola on Thursday, 10th May 2012 at Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park and Sustainable Development Centre. Through this activity, participating children and young people had the opportunity to: voice their concerns about the current quality of life and sustainable alternatives for their future; engage in a national debate about sustainable development; discuss their opinion about sustainable development issues with local policy makers; present their concerns for a sustainable future to the Maltese Rio+20 delegation; and share their views with other children and young people from other countries. Follow-up to the Summit: the declaration will be presented to the Maltese Rio+20 delegation the declaration will also be presented as a parliamentary motion at the EkoSkola Parliament session. A random selection of oral concern presentations will also be delivered. each MP will be given a CD with a copy of the declaration and all the PowerPoints produced. an international forum for the summit . School representatives will share their declaration with similar groups of children from other countries through video conferencing.
