8th EkoSkola Parliament Session

On the morning of 12th June 2012 the Parliament of Malta had a special session – students aged 6-15 from various schools participating in the EkoSkola programme sat next to Members of Parliament and put forward their opinions.  Amongst others they presented a Declaration intended for the Rio +20 Summit entitled ‘Caring for our Future’, which they themselves had  put together after a discussion summit earlier on this month.  Together with the motion in which they raised issues about sustainable living and an environmental friendly attitude, they also reminded the parliament about what had been discussed in last year’s session, urged the Parliament to take action about an issue regarding the installation of solar panels at the President’s Palace at San Anton – which came out after an environmental audit a number of students themselves made of the same Palace, spoke about projects they have been working on during this scholastic year and also put forward an appeal accompanied by a petition from students of St Thomas More, Marsascala Primary regarding a protected saline marshland in the area which is threatened by duck droppings and dumped garbage. Photos of the event can be viewed here. Summary document containing motion, Young People’s Rio Summit Declaration and student’s interventions can be downloaded from here.
