Community Garden at Wied Blandun

Who's Participating: St Joseph, Mater Boni Consilii School, Paola

On Friday the 7th December, St.Joseph Mater Boni  Consilii School Paola inaugurated the Community Garden at Wied Blandun.  This project was part of the HSBC-ES Climate Initiative in conjunction with EkoSkola. The EkoSkola committee came up with this idea towards the end of last scholastic year but this was implemented at the beginning of this year 2012-2013.  The idea was immediately accepted by the Paola Local Council and all necessary support was given to create such a space for the school-children. As its name implies, the aim behind this project is to work hand in hand with the local community...

It is Friday 14th December, 8 o’clock in the morning, we are a group of children at Siġġiewi primary.  Today we did not go to our classrooms for lessons.  We left our satchels to the side, forgot all about our lessons and started to prepare for a party.  There are sandwiches to butter, bread rolls to fill, cakes to cut up and so many more things.  By 9 o’clock we were ready to meet the elderly.  A group of around 50 elderly came to our school. On the morning of 12th June 2012 the Parliament of Malta had a special session – students aged 6-15 from various schools participating in the EkoSkola programme sat next to Members of Parliament and put forward their opinions.  Amongst others they presented a Declaration intended for the Rio +20 Summit entitled ‘Caring for our Future’, which they themselves had  put together after a discussion summit earlier on this month.  Together with the motion in which they raised issues about sustainable living and an environmental friendly attitude, they also reminded the parliament...

Fair Trade Activity

Who's Participating: St Joseph School, Blata l-Bajda

On Friday, 11th May 2012, St Joseph School, Blata l-Bajda had a Mother’s Day Activity.  So the school took this opportunity to promote Fair Trade, which is the theme the school chose to tackle in the HSBC Eco-School Climate Initiative of 2012. A stall was set up at the reception selling Fair Trade products and leaflets about Fair Trade were distributed.  These leaflets were produced by secondary school students and printed professionally on recycled paper. The year 2012 is a very significant year as besides being the 10th Anniversary for EkoSkola, it is also the 3rd UN Conference on Sustainable Development – Rio +20 due June 2012.  For this reason, a number of schools met for the Young People’s Earth Summit organised by EkoSkola on Thursday, 10th May 2012 at Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park and Sustainable Development Centre.
